Fireworks in a Jar

Fireworks in a jar is an experiment that shows water density and the immiscibility of water and oil.


First add water 3/4 of the way to a mason jar. Then add about 20 drops of food colouring to the oil in a separate container. Then mix the oil with a fork. Slowly add the oil to the water and watch as the fireworks emerge.


So How does it work?

Well, when you add the oil to the water the oil will float on top because oil has a lower density. Since water has a higher density it is heavier and will sink to the bottom. Since water and oil together is immiscible, which means it doesn't mix in water the oil stays on top. The food colouring on the other hand is water based. Originally is doesn't mix with the oil but once it is over water is sinks and breaks free from the oil. Food colouring is part water so it easily mixes with the water.
